Learning to Become Present with your Emotions

Learning to become present is essential for self-awareness and emotional well-being. Here's a simple exercise to help you tune into your emotions and body:

Step 1: Take a Breath

Begin by taking a deep breath and ask yourself, "What am I feeling in this moment?" If you're engaged in pleasurable activities, you might feel peace, joy, or happiness.

Step 2: Notice Your Feelings

If you find yourself in a situation where you get triggered or emotionally activated, it's important to take a breath, breathe deeply, and notice your feelings. Your body provides valuable clues about your emotions.

Step 3: Tune into Your Body

Your body is connected to your subconscious mind. You might not always be aware of your emotions, but you can often recognize them through body sensations. For instance:

  • If you're feeling sadness, you might feel sensations in your eyes and feel teary.

  • If you're angry, you might feel agitated, antsy, or tense.

  • If you're feeling fear, you may feel a knot in your stomach.

Step 4: Recognize Tension Points

Do you feel like you're carrying the weight of the world on your shoulders? Tightness in your jaw or shoulders can be a sign of holding onto anger or stress.

By becoming aware of the sensations in your body, you can start to recognize the emotions you're feeling in the moment.
